Teaching AI as a Creative Medium to Interdisciplinary Art and Design Students

September 22, 2023 @ 16:20 - 16:50

Note: Session time is listed in BST. Check your local time zone.

Is artificial intelligence (AI) making students less creative? Educators are debating the roles of AI in the classroom as students embrace generative tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney. In this session, the presenters will share their pedagogical experience on how they integrated this new technology into the classroom while it was emerging week by week. They will argue for the importance of interrogation of the tools. Having a basic understanding of how the databases are built allowed the students to comprehend their inherent bias and misinformation. Iterative in-class design critiques helped them reflect upon the derivative nature of AI-generated work and how these tools redefine what it means to be creative.

Presenters:

  • Jeongki Lim, Assistant Professor (Parsons School of Design, The New School)
  • Mark Randall, Associate Dean of School of Design Strategies (Parsons School of Design, The New School)
