Submission guidelines

For DEL 2021, we are considering submissions for the formats of Paper Presentation (“paper”) or Panel Discussion (“panel”). As contributions at DEL should encourage conversation, participation and collaboration among participants both these formats will be flipped sessions.

Additionally, we invite proposals for Unconference Sessions, which will focus on a conversational approach towards emerging issues, ideas and/or situations.

Please be reminded that DEL 2021 will be operated entirely online, thus all contributions need to be deliverable in digital formats.

Flipped Format

We are adopting a flipped conference approach for paper presentations and panel discussions. Taking inspiration from the flipped classroom approach to learning, flipped sessions equally provide opportunities to review content and collaborate asynchronously before a session begins. Presenters will be required to make available materials – usually a video recording of their presentation – in advance of the conference for registered participants to review. This will maximize time and space for synchronous conversations and interaction with participants during the actual conference sessions.

Please note that the asynchronous preparatory materials will need to be available three weeks in advance of the conference, i.e. by 1 September 2021. We recommend flipped videos should be no longer than 10mins. We also encourage submitters to be creative in the production of their materials.

Paper Presentation

Length: 30 minutes (typically 10 minutes for reiteration of the presenter’s main points; 20 minutes audience engagement)

At DEL, we understand the term ‘paper’ to incorporate creative practice, teaching practice and research. You may want to present a teaching case study, a research paper, the documentation of a creative practice project, or something similar.

Please note that paper presentations are flipped sessions. For example, you’ll provide a video to share online pre-conference, and then use the conference time to engage with session participants on your content.

Panel Discussion

Length: 60 minutes

Panels should have a minimum of two presenters who e.g. may dialogically introduce a group project or controversially engage about a particular topic.

Please note that panel discussions are flipped sessions. For example, both presenters may outline their respective view on an issue in pre-conference videos provided online, and then engage with the session participants to garner support for respective views.

Unconference Session

Length: 30 minutes (typically 5 minutes for introduction/outline of the questions to be discussed; 25 minutes for audience engagement)

Unconference sessions may be used to start a conversation about a concurrent or emerging idea, concept, or theme. There are no specific preparation requirements for unconference sessions other than having a few framing questions (or goals) to kick off the conversation, and inform attendees selecting between sessions.

Unconference sessions are highly flexible, more disruptive, spontaneous, concurrent. They may cover a wide range of interests –including recent challenges/development – or build on conversations started in other sessions, continue thought-provoking dialogue and debate.

Please note that submitting a proposal for an Unconference Session does not guarantee you will facilitate the session on your own. DEL may connect you with proposals addressing similar questions.

Publication Opportunity

DEL presenters have the opportunity to submit a paper based on their DEL contribution to the open access, peer reviewed Spark Journal, typically only available for UAL staff and students. Spark: UAL Creative Teaching and Learning Journal is an online journal for university teachers, researchers and students with a focus on exploring all aspects of teaching and learning in arts, design and communication.

Please note that Spark Journal will conduct its own peer-review and there is no guarantee for your submission to be accepted, even if accepted for DEL 2021.
